The Battle of Şarköy

Year: 1913
Location: Şarköy, Turkey

After the Young Turk coup of 29 January 1913, the Ottoman Empire resumed operations against Bulgarian forces in Eastern Thrace to lift the siege of Edirne. Plans included an amphibious landing at Şarköy on the Sea of Marmara, close to the rear of the 7th Rila Infantry Division. The landing took place on 8 February on an unguarded stretch of coast. The troops immediately advanced towards Şarköy, but two battalions of the Macedonian-Adrianople Volunteer Corps met them on its approaches and offered determined resistance for several hours. On 9 February, the landing force received substantial reinforcements, but the Bulgarians also used the time to concentrate Fourth Army units in the battle area. On 10 February, they launched a powerful counterattack and pressed the Ottoman troops against the sea. Under Bulgarian artillery fire, only a small proportion managed to withdraw. The landing ended in complete failure.

The battle ended in a Bulgarian victory.
