The Stara Zagora Uprising

Year: 1875
Period: Ottoman rule

The Stara Zagora Uprising of 1875 was initiated by the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee (BRCC). On 12 August 1875, the BRCC decided to organise a nationwide uprising. Five insurgent regions were designated: Tarnovo, Stara Zagora, Ruse–Shumen, Lovech–Troyan and Sliven. Stara Zagora was chosen as the uprising's centre, with Stefan Stambolov as its leader. Some committee members considered military action against the Ottoman Empire premature, and the uprising thus acquired a more widespread character. Participation was greatest in the villages around Stara Zagora.

The Stara Zagora Uprising of 1185 demonstrated that Bulgarian society was ready to organise a mass military campaign against Ottoman rule and restore the Bulgarian state.
