Karposh's Uprising

Year: 1689
Period: Ottoman rule

Karposh's Uprising was one of three uprisings against Ottoman rule that broke out almost simultaneously in the late seventeenth century, alongside the Second Tarnovo and Chiprovtsi uprisings. As early as the spring of 1689, Strahil Voivode led a detachment of hajduks and voynuks. In October 1689, an uprising also broke out in the Sanjak of Kyustendil, led by Petar Karposh. It encompassed the territories around Kyustendil, Pirot and Skopje. On 20 November 1689, a Turkish-Tatar army marched against the rebels. It first passed through Kyustendil, where one of Karposh's detachments was defeated, and then headed towards Kriva Palanka, where the garrison was overcome. Karposh escaped and withdrew to Kumanovo, where the final battle took place. Many rebels were captured, including Karposh.

The uprising ended in failure.
