Terms of office
- Prime minister · caretaker government — Caretaker government
Law, scholarship and teaching
Ognyan Gerdzhikov is a lawyer and professor associated with civil and commercial law. His official biography records studies at Sofia University, academic work and training abroad. Legal writing and teaching form a central part of his career. They preceded his senior political offices and remained important to his public professional identity.
Speaker of the National Assembly
In 2001 Gerdzhikov became speaker of the 39th National Assembly. His parliamentary service connected him with the NDSV and Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha’s period in government. The speaker directs the legislature’s work, a different function from his later responsibilities as prime minister. The two offices should therefore be distinguished in his biography.
The caretaker cabinet in 2017
After taking office, President Rumen Radev appointed a caretaker government headed by Gerdzhikov. Parliament was dissolved from 27 January 2017 and elections were scheduled for 26 March. The official decree and announcement establish the caretaker period’s framework: the government was to maintain continuity until a new parliamentary administration could be formed.
Legal expertise and executive responsibility
Gerdzhikov handed over in May 2017 to Boyko Borisov’s third government. His brief administration was distinctive for being led by a legal scholar and former parliamentary speaker. Academic reputation does not itself establish government performance; the concrete record lies in cabinet acts and the fulfilment of responsibilities during the election period.
