Gabdula Chelbir

Title: Kan
Accession: 1178
End of rule: 1225

Gabdulla Chelbir, or simply Chelbir, was ruler of Volga Bulgaria from 1178 to 1225. He was the son of Khan Otyak. During Chelbir's reign, Volga Bulgaria's economy strengthened, and the state's army became large and effective in combat. During this period the capital of Volga Bulgaria moved from the city of Bolgar to the city of Bilyar.

Immediately after ascending the throne, Emir Chelbir faced the challenge of dealing with the Cumans, who at that time controlled the steppes north of the Black Sea. Some Cumans were allies of the Bulgars and inhabited the interior of the state. However, other Cumans continued to carry out devastating raids on Volga Bulgaria's territory.

Chelbir began a war against the breakaway Cuman groups that lasted several years. Through successful diplomatic and military efforts, Gabdula Chelbir succeeded in drawing the Cumans into an alliance. The resulting peace was consolidated and maintained until the end of his reign. From 1223 he fought the Mongol-Tatars.
