The Second Battle of Constantinople

Year: 913
Location: Constantinople

Several factors, including the Byzantine struggle for the throne, hostility towards Bulgaria and the Byzantine defeat at Bulgarophygon, persuaded Tsar Simeon that the time had come to conquer the hitherto unconquered Constantinople. He reached its walls in August 913. Contrary to his expectations, the Byzantines set aside their disputes over who should rule and united against Simeon the Great's forces. As he lacked the resources to capture Constantinople, Simeon proposed peace negotiations.

Byzantium agreed to a humiliating peace treaty whose terms disadvantaged the empire while glorifying Tsar Simeon's power and greatness.
