The Battle of Bulgarophygon
Year: 896
Location: Bulgarophygon, modern Babaeski, Turkey
Ruler: Simeon the Great
The fighting took place during the Bulgarian-Byzantine war that began in 894 over the relocation of Bulgarian merchants and increased charges imposed on them in Byzantium. Victory at the Southern Bug enabled Simeon to consolidate his position. Responding to Byzantium, he launched a southward campaign, reaching Bulgarophygon in 896. The Byzantines summoned reinforcements from their troops fighting the Arabs.
Despite these additional resources, the Byzantine forces were still unable to defeat the Bulgarians and were routed. After the battle, Byzantium concluded a peace treaty with Bulgaria, restoring Bulgarian merchants to Constantinople and ceding Strandzha.
