The Battle for Pirot

Year: 1885
Location: Pirot, Serbia

Following the victory at Slivnitsa, the Bulgarian army launched a counteroffensive that soon brought it to the approaches to Pirot. The Serbian Nišava Army had taken defensive positions on the heights east of the town. On the morning of 14 November 1885, Bulgarian troops defeated the Serbian covering forces along the border and advanced towards Pirot, engaging the enemy by early afternoon. By the end of the day, the heights on the Serbian defence's left flank had been captured. The enemy was also driven back on the right flank, after which the Serbian forces in the centre were attacked and forced to retreat. During the night, they took positions on the heights west of Pirot. On the following day, 15 November, they were driven from these positions too and fled westwards in complete disorder. Bulgarian troops were preparing to attack Niš without pausing their advance when diplomatic considerations brought the offensive to a halt.

On 16 November, Bulgaria and Serbia concluded an armistice.
