Mur Operation

Year: 1945
Location: Mur River

Following the political changes in Bulgaria in the second half of 1944, the country's new leadership decided to join the anti-Hitler coalition. The Mur Operation was a Bulgarian offensive campaign against the forces of the German Empire, also known as the Third Reich. Its aim was to remove the German Wehrmacht troops from the area around Nagykanizsa. There were oilfields around the town that the Nazis exploited. Military operations took place from 29 March to 13 May.

The Bulgarian First Army was initially repulsed, but hostilities resumed on 7 May. This time, the Bulgarian troops succeeded in defeating the Third Reich and continued their advance as far as the foothills of the Austrian Alps around Klagenfurt.
