Tsar Simeon II Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was born on 16 June 1937 in Sofia. His parents were Tsar Boris III and Tsarina Giovanna of Savoy. He occupied the throne from 1943 to 1946. Because he was of age during this period, a regency council governed on his behalf. On 15 September 1946, a referendum was held to declare Bulgaria a republic. With the support of most parties, it was decided that Bulgaria would cease to be a monarchy and become a republic. Following these decisions, on 16 September 1946 Tsar Simeon II, together with his mother, Tsarina Giovanna of Savoy, and his sister, Princess Marie Louise, was expelled from the country.
The royal family settled in Spain. In 2001 he returned to Bulgaria, where he established his own party, the National Movement Simeon II (NDSV), which contested and won the 2001 parliamentary elections. The party governed in a coalition with the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS). On 6 July 2009, Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha resigned as leader of NDSV and returned to Spain once again, where he remains to this day.
