Fourth Battle of Çatalca

Fourth Battle of Çatalca
The Battle of Çatalca, fought from 11 to 18 March 1913, was the fourth and final battle between Bulgarian and Ottoman troops before Çatalca. In the previous battle there, the Bulgarians had retained control of Eastern Thrace. On 11 March 1913, coinciding with the assault on Edirne Fortress, the Bulgarian troops launched an attack to recover positions relinquished in the preceding months. General Stefan Toshev commanded the 1st and 9th Infantry Divisions during this operation.
By 13 March, the Bulgarians had driven the Ottomans back beyond the Karasu River, east of Çatalca. After a brief lull, on 15–16 March the 1st Brigade of the 1st Division attacked the bridgehead on Büyükçekmece Bay in the Sea of Marmara. Although the area had been heavily fortified since its capture in January, with the forts of Fanasakris and Arnavutköy, a Bulgarian night attack succeeded in taking some Ottoman positions at Arnavutköy. Despite this success, the Bulgarian 37th Regiment came under intense fire from three sides, including from the sea, and lost almost ¼ of its strength before withdrawing. Following their victory at Arnavutköy, the Ottomans launched a counteroffensive in the Kumburgaz area on 17–18 March but were repulsed with heavy losses.
After this battle, only minor engagements took place in the Çatalca area until the end of the war.
