Botev's band seizes the Radetzky
Year: 1876
Location: Kozloduy
Period: Ottoman rule
Ruler: Hristo Botev
Botev's band seized the Radetzky. At about noon, as the steamer approached Kozloduy, the men put on their insurgent uniforms at their commander's signal and forced the crew at gunpoint to stop on the Bulgarian bank. A telegram announcing the band's aims was sent to major European newspapers. Hristo Botev wrote farewell letters to his wife Veneta and his friends. After disembarking, the men swore an oath before the flag sewn by Petrana Obretenova and headed towards Butan, Dobrolevo, Borovan and Banitsa.
Regular Turkish troops from Sliven attacked Boyadzhik, putting the village to fire and sword. All the Bulgarians captured were massacred.
