Battle of Svishtov

Battle of Svishtov
The Battle of Svishtov was a key moment in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, distinguished by the Russian army's accomplished planning and execution.
A composite force under Major General Mikhail Dragomirov prepared and carried out the Danube crossing towards Svishtov. The landing began on the night of 14/26 June, when Russian troops crossed successfully near the mouth of the Tekirdere and established a bridgehead on enemy territory.
Despite strong winds and the river's current, the landing succeeded. The composite force quickly organised and seized important positions around Svishtov. A bold, coordinated attack defeated the Ottoman forces and secured the town and surrounding heights.
The capture of Svishtov gave the Russian army a major regional advantage and a strategic opportunity to gain the upper hand. It established a firm Russian presence on Bulgarian territory and paved the way for later successes in the war.
