Battle of Kavala

Year: 689
Location: Kavala, Greece
Ruler: Kuber

In the second half of the seventh century, the Slavs launched numerous attacks against Byzantium. At the same time, Old Great Bulgaria broke apart, and a number of Bulgar tribes settled in Byzantine territory. Meanwhile, the Khazars established their unified state, the Khazar Khaganate. The Byzantine emperor Justinian II organised numerous campaigns against the different groups. In 688, he launched an attack on Kuber's Bulgars, who were allied with the Slavs. The following year, while returning from a campaign against the Slavs near Thessaloniki, his troops were intercepted by Kuber's Bulgars near Kavala.

Justinian II's troops were routed.
