Battle of Dzhuranli

Year: 1877
Location: Dzhuranli village, central Bulgaria
Period: Ottoman rule

The Battle of Dzhuranli exemplified the manoeuvre tactics used by Russian commanders against Ottoman forces in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. It formed part of the Advance Detachment's effort to disrupt and weaken Nova Zagora's Ottoman garrison and prevent it from joining the Central Army.

After the Ottoman garrison left Nova Zagora on 17 July to join the Central Army, Russian troops under Lieutenant General Iosif Gurko pursued it. At Dzhuranli on 19 July, the Russians used manoeuvre and a strong forward echelon to attack the Ottoman positions. The source also describes this echelon as being attacked by Russian advance guards. Despite fierce fighting, Reuf Pasha's troops were forced to retreat towards Karabunar.

Russian strategic initiative and effective tactics caused heavy Ottoman losses and weakened their forces. After successive setbacks at Nova Zagora and Stara Zagora, Russian troops took defensive positions at Shipka Pass, strengthening them in preparation for further Ottoman attacks.

This series of engagements contributed to Russian success in the war and the eventual liberation of southern Bulgaria from Ottoman rule.
