Battle of Dolna Mitropolia

Battle of Dolna Mitropolia
The Battle of Dolna Mitropolia was a defining episode in the Siege of Pleven, a turning point in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 with profound consequences for the war and Bulgaria's liberation.
After three unsuccessful assaults, the Russian command decided to blockade Pleven completely and force Osman Pasha's Western Army to surrender. General Eduard Totleben, appointed commander of Russian forces at Pleven, implemented the blockade by building fortifications and trenches around the town.
The battle was a key part of the siege. The source describes Russian troops as breaking through and destroying the Ottoman blockade, forcing the Ottomans to surrender. Large numbers of soldiers and commanders were captured, along with substantial military supplies.
Both sides suffered heavy casualties, but the Russian victory strengthened their position and hastened the end of the siege and the war. After Pleven fell, the Russian army continued its successful campaign, liberating further Bulgarian territory and prompting the Ottomans to seek peace.
The battle remains a symbol of the Russian army's determination and strength in the struggle for Bulgaria's liberation in the nineteenth century.
