Battle of Breznik

Year: 1885
Location: Breznik
Period: Ottoman rule
Ruler: Ilyo

The Battle of Breznik on 6 November 1885 was an important engagement in the Serbo-Bulgarian War. The Serbian Morava Division defeated the Bulgarian Radomir Detachment. Although a tactical defeat, it had strategic importance for Bulgaria by contributing to the subsequent victory at Slivnitsa.

Before the battle, on 5 November, Breznik fell to the Morava Division, which screened the main Serbian advance towards Sofia. Bulgarian command anticipated the move but lacked the forces to stop it.

Captain Stefan Kisov, commander of the Radomir Detachment, was ordered to attack Serbian positions around Breznik to delay the Morava Division. The Bulgarians were at a disadvantage, having to fight without artillery support.

After a brief, fierce engagement, they were defeated, losing about 300 men killed, wounded or captured. Kisov gathered around 500 survivors and withdrew towards Samokov to avoid Serbian cavalry pursuit.

Despite the defeat, Breznik bought Bulgarian command time to prepare for subsequent battles and concentrate more effectively on its strategic objectives. This enabled the Bulgarians to defeat their Serbian opponents in later engagements.
