Battle of Batuliya

Battle of Batuliya
The Battle of Batuliya was an engagement between Bulgarian army and gendarmerie units and the Second Sofia People's Liberation Brigade during the Second World War.
In mid-May 1944, the Second Sofia People's Liberation Brigade, formed from units of the Tran Partisan Detachment and the Hristo Botev Soldiers' Partisan Battalion, began a fighting march from Kalna village in the Tran region towards the western Balkan Mountains. This march formed part of efforts to concentrate partisan forces around Sofia. The brigade was well armed and equipped with British weapons dropped in areas where the Yugoslav People's Liberation Army partisans operated. On 22 May, entering unfamiliar terrain, the brigade seized local inhabitants and used them as guides. A day later, it reached the vicinity of Batuliya village, where the clash took place.
The Battle of Batuliya is remembered as the fiercest clash between government forces and partisans during the communist resistance movement in Bulgaria. Victory went to the government forces.
