Stone sculpture

Among the best-preserved examples of this art are the stone relief slabs from Stara Zagora. They depict various fantastic animals: a leopard, a griffin, peacocks and a double-headed eagle. Most researchers consider the slabs locally made, because their stone is found only in the Sredna Gora region, where the slabs themselves were discovered. The same stone was also used for paving in the capital, Pliska. They were probably made around the ninth century and used in the practice of a local pagan cult.
