Miniature painting

Miniature painting also developed during the Second Bulgarian Empire. It was used to decorate commissioned manuscript books. Among the outstanding examples is the London Gospels of Tsar Ivan Alexander, illustrated with 366 miniatures. The tsar also commissioned 69 coloured miniatures for the Bulgarian copy of the Manasses Chronicle. The Tomić Psalter, likewise dating from Ivan Alexander's reign, was decorated with 109 coloured miniatures.
