Folk music
Period: Third Bulgarian State
Bulgarian folk music is a musical genre created in the first half of the twentieth century that reproduces and reinterprets the traditional musical folklore of the Bulgarian lands. It derives from premodern, chiefly rural folklore separated from its original ritual and everyday settings. It developed in two principal directions: preserving traditional music in as authentic a form as possible, and adapting it to the different needs of modern audiences, including high culture and popular music.
Bulgarian folk music displays varied styles and means of expression according to the regions in which it developed. It is divided among several folkloric and ethnographic regions, each giving its sound different nuances and characteristics.
