Velcho's Conspiracy

Velcho's Conspiracy
Velcho's Conspiracy of 1835 ended in failure for the uprising. The Turkish authorities uncovered the plot and suppressed the uprising with brutal reprisals. The Bulgarian conspirators were commonly subjected to torture and severe punishment. Some of its leaders, including Velcho Atanasov, Dimitar Sofiyanliyata, Yordan Bradata and Kolyo Gaytandzhiyata, were hanged in Tarnovo on 4 April 1835. Others were sent into exile. Georgi Mamarchev was handed over to the Ottoman authorities, tortured and exiled to Siberia.
Although unsuccessful, the conspiracy expressed the Bulgarian people's strong desire for liberation and autonomy. Moreover, connections with the Russian Empire, even if unsuccessful, demonstrated the effort to secure outside support for Bulgaria's struggle for freedom.
