Varban's Uprising

Varban's Uprising
Varban's Uprising broke out in the Chiprovtsi region in 1837, between the two Chiprovtsi uprisings. It was led by Varban Panov.
It was one of the revolts against the Ottoman Empire that broke out in north-western Bulgaria in the first half of the nineteenth century. Their principal cause was local Ottoman officials' unwillingness to implement land reform. Organised by the Bulgarian population, these uprisings aimed to win liberation from Ottoman rule. The Serbian state supported Bulgarian insurgents in this part of the country in order to bring the rebellious districts under the jurisdiction of autonomous Serbia. Nevertheless, Serbian intervention often brought disappointment and suffering to Bulgarians, as Serbian authorities cooperated with the Ottoman state in suppressing uprisings whenever it served Serbia's interests.
The uprising was suppressed. It was followed, however, by the Second Chiprovtsi Uprising.
