The Third Tarnovo Uprising

Year: 1856
Period: Ottoman rule

The Third Tarnovo Uprising broke out in 1856 and encompassed the Tarnovo and Gabrovo regions. It was led by Nikola Filipovski, better known as Captain Dyado Nikola, or simply Dyado Nikola. The outbreak of the Crimean War encouraged the Bulgarian population to mobilise and continue its struggle for independence. Captain Dyado Nikola was assisted by Petko Slaveykov, Nikola Kozlev and Petar-Pandeli Kisimov. They also established contact with Georgi Rakovski. On 28 July 1856, the insurgents gathered at Lyaskovets Monastery near Tarnovo, from where the detachment set out towards the Balkan Mountains. It was defeated on the outskirts of Gabrovo. The remaining fighters headed towards the village of Shipka, where they were finally crushed and Captain Dyado Nikola was killed.

The uprising ended in failure.
