The Morava Uprising

The Morava Uprising
During the First World War, in the autumn of 1915, the Serbian army was defeated following Bulgaria's involvement in the Kosovo Operation. A large proportion of its forces withdrew into the Morava region. Bulgaria did not clear the area of military personnel, believing they would remain loyal to the new administration. It was these military personnel who decided to rebel against the established regime. Vojinović led an insurgent detachment operating around Kopaonik and Kuršumlija. Milinko Vlahović led another detachment towards Vranje. A third leader, Pećanac, operated in the Prokuplje region. On 12 March 1917, Bulgaria launched a counteroffensive against the insurgent detachments jointly with Austria-Hungary. By 25 March, these forces had restored the regime in the rebellious territories.
The uprising was suppressed. The Austro-Hungarian army formed entirely Albanian units whose task was to capture the Serbian guerrillas.
