The First Tarnovo Uprising
Year: 1598
Period: Ottoman rule
Several organised uprisings against Ottoman rule were attempted in the sixteenth century. One was the First Tarnovo Uprising. Its immediate stimulus was a successful campaign by the Wallachian prince Michael the Brave against the Ottoman army near Silistra on 10 September 1598. The First Tarnovo Uprising broke out in the former Bulgarian capital. For the first time after two centuries of Ottoman bondage, the idea of restoring the Bulgarian state emerged. The uprising's extent is unknown, but some historical sources suggest that it also encompassed territories around Niš, Ohrid and Sredets.
The First Tarnovo Uprising ended in failure.
