The Chiprovtsi Uprising

Year: 1688
Period: Ottoman rule

During Ottoman rule, Chiprovtsi became a region with special status because of its numerous ore deposits. They were designated as a hass, a sultan's feudal estate. Besides its natural wealth, Chiprovtsi was distinguished by a large Catholic population with a centuries-long presence in these lands. One of the uprising's organisers was Petar Parchevich, a Catholic bishop. Another detachment was led by Georgi Peyachevich and joined the fighting in the spring of 1688. The local Catholic population largely relied on external military support from the West, specifically Austria. This assistance never arrived, and the uprising was suppressed.

The uprising ended in failure. The Ottoman Empire began a mass extermination of the local population, while those who managed to escape migrated across the Danube.
