The Bachkovo Uprising
Year: 1861
Period: Ottoman rule
The Bachkovo Uprising of 1861 formed part of a series of popular uprisings and protests in the Ottoman Empire in the second half of the nineteenth century, known as the Bulgarian liberation struggle. It took place in the area of Bachkovo Monastery in central Bulgaria.
The uprising was organised by Bulgarian Christians dissatisfied with Ottoman rule. Its leaders were local figures and the brotherhood of Bachkovo Monastery.
The uprising broke out in 1861 with protests and armed clashes around Bachkovo Monastery.
As with many other uprisings of the period, the Ottoman Empire succeeded in suppressing it. The Bulgarian community continued its struggle for liberation over the following decades.
