Bulgaria’s first woman prime minister

In October 1994 Indzhova became head of the caretaker government following Lyuben Berov’s cabinet. She was Bulgaria’s first woman prime minister, a significant event in women’s representation at the highest level of executive power. Although the cabinet had a temporary political purpose, it carried out the actual day-to-day responsibilities of government.

Elections and economic continuity

The caretaker period covered preparations for parliamentary elections at the end of 1994. It followed the major external debt restructuring and preceded Zhan Videnov’s government. Its brief duration limited the time available for long-term reform, while the state’s budgetary and administrative obligations continued. Maintaining that continuity was a central function of the caretaker administration.

Later work in national statistics

Much later, Indzhova headed the National Statistical Institute from March 2012 to April 2014. The NSI’s official history documents this stage of her career. It connects her biography with the production of population, economic and social data used in public policy. Her government and statistical posts were distinct institutional roles and should be assessed separately.
