- Prime minister — Denkov government
Physical chemistry and international research
Nikolai Denkov is a physical chemist. His university biography records research on foams, emulsions and related physicochemical systems, together with work involving international academic and industrial partners. He earned his doctorate in 1993, a higher doctorate in 2007 and became a professor in 2008. Academic work was a central part of his life before politics.
From research to education policy
Denkov held university leadership positions and subsequently entered education administration as deputy minister and minister of education and science. This move connected his professional expertise with public policy for schools, universities and research. The premiership broadened his responsibilities beyond the field in which he had accumulated specialised experience.
The government of 2023–2024
Denkov became head of a regular government in June 2023 after an extended period of caretaker cabinets. His administration restored a parliament-elected Council of Ministers, although political durability remained a central issue. His term ended in April 2024; earlier, on 6 March, the National Assembly considered and accepted the government’s resignation.
The first stage of Schengen accession
In December 2023 the European decision was taken to remove checks at internal air and sea borders from 31 March 2024. This milestone occurred during Denkov’s cabinet. Land-border checks were removed later, from 1 January 2025. Distinguishing the two stages avoids incorrectly attributing the entire accession process to a single administration.
Scientific biography and political assessment
Dimitar Glavchev succeeded Denkov as prime minister. Denkov’s biography brings together internationally documented scientific work and participation in political coalitions. Research publications establish the academic contribution, while parliamentary and European institutional decisions document the government period. Achievement in one field cannot substitute for assessment of the other.
