Revolutionary Velyo Sirekov

Velyo Sirekov

Active from: 1876
Active until: 1912
Period: Ottoman rule

Velyo Atanasov Sirekov, or Seyrekov, was born in Koprivshtitsa village around 1842 to Atanas and Nevena Sirekov. He earned his living as a joiner and carpenter.

As a conspirator and member of the Revolutionary Committee, Sirekov participated in preparing the uprising in his hometown from 20 to 30 April 1876. After its suppression, the authorities captured him on 6 May that year and escorted him to Sofia, from where he was transferred to prison in Filibe.

After six months in prison, he was released because the charges that he was an insurgent, which he consistently denied, could not be proved.
