Theodore Sigritsa was a prominent Bulgarian military commander and aristocrat who served as kavhan to Tsar Simeon I the Great from 893 to 927. During his service, Theodore played a key role in important diplomatic missions and military campaigns of the Bulgarian state.
In 895, Sigritsa led the delegation that went to Constantinople to exchange prisoners and captives between Bulgaria and Byzantium. In 913, he actively participated in negotiations for peace between the two states, which included Simeon's coronation as tsar of Bulgaria.
Sigritsa also participated in the successful military campaigns against the Serbs in 917. In 924, however, he and Marmais, serving under him, were attacked and killed by Serbian troops. Their deaths led to the destruction of the Serbian state and its incorporation into Bulgaria that same year.
Theodore Sigritsa's name is preserved in history and geography. Sigritsa Point on Livingston Island in Antarctica's South Shetland Islands is named in his honour.
