Stoyan or Yoan Marko the Bulgarian was a Greek revolutionary and soldier of Bulgarian origin who played an important role in the Greek War of Independence. He was born in the late eighteenth century in Voden. In early 1822, he took part in the Negush Uprising as Angel Gatso's standard-bearer and managed to escape when the town was destroyed in April. He then went to the Peloponnese with Gatso's detachment, taking part in the battles against Mahmud Dramali Pasha and the Battle of Dervenakia on 26 July 1822.
In 1823, he moved to Magnesia, where he participated in the Battle of Trikeri against Mehmed Kutahi Pasha. After the truce at Trikeri, he followed the troops to Skiathos, where he took part in the battle against the vice-admiral of the Ottoman fleet, Husrev Topal Pasha. At the end of the same year, he returned to Central Greece, where he participated in the Battle of Atalanti from 5 to 9 November 1826 and was seriously wounded.
He then continued his struggle in Thessaly, where a fierce battle was fought at Trikeri on 9 and 10 November 1827 against Nurka Servani's Albanians, in which Servani himself was killed.
After the end of the revolution, he settled in Atalanti, where he worked as a guard at the local salt warehouse until his death in 1834. Gatso described him as a brave soldier, a patriot and entirely devoted to his commander. Marko expressed a wish to receive land on which to build a house for his family, but his application was refused on procedural grounds.
