Revolutionary Stoyan Kapitan

Stoyan Kapitan

Active from: 1821
Period: Ottoman rule

Stoyan Kapitan was a nineteenth-century Bulgarian revolutionary who took part in the Greek War of Independence. Born in Arilevo near Krushevo, then in the Ottoman Empire, he became a hajduk in the Katerini region, robbing wealthy Turks and trying to protect the subject population.

When the Greek uprising began in 1821, he joined Markos Botsaris's band and fought alongside the Souliots against the Ottoman army in the struggle to free Greek lands. He became a symbol of the region's nineteenth-century struggle for freedom and independence.
