Stoimen Nikudinski
Title: Hajduk
Active until: 1860
Period: Ottoman rule
Stoimen Voivode was a 19th-century Bulgarian hajduk born in Nikudin, a village in the Melnik region. For many years he served as a pandur, or guard, at Rila Monastery alongside Ilyo Voivode. When Ilyo became a hajduk, Stoimen was his standard-bearer. Later, Stoimen formed his own band but suffered serious wounds. Ilyo Voivode took him back into his band, nursed him to health and again appointed him standard-bearer. Nevertheless, he later separated with his own band once more and fought a desperate battle against a Turkish pursuing force, in which he died in autumn 1860.
Despite the loss, Ilyo Voivode retained warm feelings towards Stoimen and remarked in 1892 that men like him were rare and difficult to find.
