Stefan Oreshkov
Stefan Dyankov Oreshkov, also known as Shipkaliycheto or Shipchancheto, was a Bulgarian hajduk who joined the detachments of Filip Totyu Voivode, Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadzha.
He came from the village of Shipka or the town of Kazanlak. Because of the harsh living conditions in his native area, he left home and went to Wallachia, where he lived among Bulgarian revolutionary émigrés. He took part in the expedition of Filip Totyu's detachment in 1867 and was one of the few survivors of its fierce battles. The following year he joined Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadzha's detachment and fought in all its engagements.
On 17 July 1868 he was betrayed by his cousin and captured in Shipka. He took all the responsibility upon himself to save his younger kinsman, Hristo Patrev. He was hanged in Kazanlak together with Hristo Yanakov in the square then known as Kyul Bokluk.
Stefan Oreshkov is remembered for his self-sacrifice and determination to fight for the Bulgarian people's freedom. Near the site of his hanging in Kazanlak, a memorial plaque commemorates his death as a martyr and honours his memory alongside other fallen volunteers and detachment members.
