Tsar Shishman IV

Shishman IV

Title: Tsar
Accession: 1598
End of rule: 1598
Period: Ottoman rule

Shishman IV is thought to have been a descendant of the Bulgarian royal Shishman dynasty, born in the sixteenth century in Nikopol, then part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1598 he was proclaimed tsar of Bulgaria during the First Tarnovo Uprising. Although Tarnovo was temporarily freed from Ottoman rule, the uprising was quickly suppressed by a large Ottoman army that entered the city. Shishman IV's name may be associated with this brief period of history, but the lack of objective historical records and corroboration makes information about him limited and uncertain.
