Voivode Radan
Radan
Radan Voyvoda was a legendary hero who defended the town of Vratitsa during the Ottoman Empire's invasions in the fourteenth century. With a heart full of sorrow and fear, but also determination to protect his people, Radan Voyvoda stood as the fortress's last defender.
His daughter Elitsa had been left alone at home, and fear and anxiety weighed on him, making him think about her safety. Amid the flames and destruction engulfing his lands, Radan Voyvoda decided to save his daughter from the invaders' horrors.
After enduring the horrors of battle and his people's suffering, Radan Voyvoda made a decision no parent would wish to make. He decided to save his daughter from the horrors of captivity by killing her. He then killed himself to avoid the capture and torture awaiting him.
The legend of the Bloody Rock preserves the memory of the sacrifice of Radan Voyvoda and his daughter, who shed their blood in the struggle for freedom. This story symbolises the Bulgarian people's determination and self-sacrifice in resisting invaders.
Radan Voyvoda was a boyar of the Second Bulgarian Empire and continued his struggle with a small hajduk band even after the resistance at Vratitsa was broken. He died in battle near Sofia at the end of the century.
