Paisii of Hilendar, also known as Father Paisii, was a Bulgarian national awakener, clergyman and saint whose influence on Bulgarian history and culture was profound. He wrote the Slav-Bulgarian History, one of the most important works of the Bulgarian National Revival, expressing ideas of national renewal and liberation.

He was born in 1722, most likely in Bansko. Despite lacking a systematic formal education, he was highly learned and familiar with many historical sources and writings. In 1745, he became a monk at Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos, where he became known for his book and efforts to spread knowledge.

The source dates the composition of the Slav-Bulgarian History to 'between 1762 and 1762'. The work played a key role in awakening Bulgarian national consciousness, presenting the people's rich history and culture and calling for unity and a struggle for freedom.

Paisii's legacy is immense. One of the most revered figures of the National Revival, he symbolises national spirit and identity. Numerous schools and streets bear his name, while an annual State Award named after him encourages Bulgarian cultural figures to continue exploring the country's history and traditions. A memorial museum in Bansko preserves artefacts and memories of his life and work.
