Kan Pagan

Pagan

Title: Kan
Accession: 765
End of rule: 766

After Khan Umor’s death, a khan whose personal name is unknown ascended the throne; the Byzantines called him Pagan. He also began a policy of reconciliation with the Byzantine Empire. Even the former khan Sivin took part in the negotiations, but they did not produce any notable success for Bulgaria. The Slavic prince Slavun was also captured, considerably weakening the Bulgarian frontier. Against this historical background, a severe drought occurred in 764. Grain prices rose sharply. Popular discontent led Khan Pagan to flee to Varna, where his own subordinates killed him.
