Tarkan Ohsun

Tarkan Ohsun
Ohsun
Ohsun, Hsun or Shun was a ninth-century Bulgarian military commander who served Kan Omurtag. He bore the title zhupan-tarkan and belonged to the Kyurigir or Kirigir clan. Kan Omurtag erected a commemorative stone inscription honouring Ohsun, a close associate of the ruler known as a 'fed man', or retainer, who died in battle.
The inscription, in Greek, reads as follows:
Κανασυβιγι Ομυρταγ ο Χσουνοσ ο ζουπαν ταρ- κανοσ θρεπτοσ αντροποσ μου ιτον κε απεθαεν ισ το φοσατον. ιτον δε το γενοσ αυτου Κυριγηρ
Kanasubigi Omirtag: Hsun the zhupan-tarkan was my retainer and died in the army. His clan was Kirigir.
The Greek pronunciation and spelling of Bulgarian names and titles have given rise to differing interpretations. On the basis of other inscriptions and foreign sources, Bulgarian historical scholarship has established Omurtag as the standard form of Kan Omurtag's name.
