Period: Ottoman rule

Neofit Rilski was a prominent Bulgarian monk, teacher and artist whose influence on nineteenth-century education was particularly significant. He was born in 1790 or 1793 in Banya (Guliyna Banya), in the Razlog region, into what the source calls a family of pupils. He showed an early interest in art and learning.

After learning icon painting at Rila Monastery, he devoted himself to teaching. In 1827, he began teaching in Samokov and later worked in various Bulgarian towns and districts. He became an important educational figure, spiritual mentor and secretary to Bishop Ignatius.

He was also a textbook author. In 1835, he published the first Bulgarian grammar textbook, making a major contribution to education, and compiled other teaching materials widely used in Bulgarian schools.

In 1860, he became abbot of Rila Monastery, continuing to support education and culture. He died there on 4 January 1881, leaving a substantial educational and cultural legacy.
