Marko Boishtki

Title: Voivode
Active from: 1600
Active until: 1615
Period: Ottoman rule

Marko was a seventeenth-century Bulgarian hajduk, born in the village of Boishte in the Demir Hisar region. He became a hajduk and took command of a detachment, with which he spent 15 years fighting. When he was captured by the authorities and brought to trial, he declared:

"You destroy our churches; we destroy your mosques. Our priests are better than your hodjas."

This statement is used as evidence that the hajduk movement was not simply banditry, but a conscious struggle against foreign rule in the Bulgarian lands.
