Lukan Lilov
Lukan Iliyov Lilov exemplifies commitment and devotion to the Bulgarian people's struggle for national liberation. A priest, educator and national revolutionary, he joined the Lovech Local Revolutionary Committee of the Internal Revolutionary Organisation (IRO), working actively to free the country from Ottoman rule.
His family home became a centre of revolutionary activity, and he and his entire family committed themselves to the struggle for freedom. In 1869 he was even sheltered and hidden by Vasil Levski.
Lukan Lilov was arrested on charges of involvement in revolutionary activities, but during his trial it was established that he had not been involved, and he was released immediately. This demonstrates his unwavering devotion to the rights of the Bulgarian people and the ideals of freedom and independence.
Lukan Lilov died during the Russo-Turkish War when the Turks recaptured Lovech in 1877, becoming a victim of his commitment to Bulgaria's liberation struggle. He was one of the many heroes of the Liberation period whose sacrifice and commitment remain unforgettable in the history of the Bulgarian people.
