Kuzman Kapitan was a Bulgarian hajduk and serdar born in Varbyani, or according to other sources Slivovo, towards the end of the eighteenth century.
He travelled through western Macedonia protecting local people from Albanian brigands. He became a local security commander for the Ohrid lord Dzheladin Bey and used his band to clear brigands from the Ohrid, Bitola and Prilep regions. Defeating Osman Mura's and Dervish Mucha's gangs earned him the nickname Kareman, meaning 'hero'.
He died in the 1830s.
He is the hero of many folk songs and of Grigor Parlichev's poem The Serdar.
