Kaymak Stoyna
Title: Hajduk
Active until: 1850
Period: Ottoman rule
Kaymak Stoyna was a Bulgarian female hajduk active in Macedonia in the mid-nineteenth century. Before becoming a hajduk, she had been married for sixteen years to Stoimen Terziyata in Pancharevo. Her beautiful face and slender figure earned her the nickname Kaymak.
After a confrontation with Turks sheltering in their home, she persuaded her husband to join the hajduks. They fought together for seven or eight years between 1840 and 1850. Both commanded the band, but Stoyna was regarded as the greater fighter.
She died at a watermill in the Pomak village of Tsarnik in Maleshevo, after which the band dispersed. She remains a symbol of the courage and determination of Bulgarian hajduks in nineteenth-century Macedonia.
