Revolutionary Gruyu Staribratov

Gruyu Staribratov

Active from: 1876
Active until: 1928
Period: Ottoman rule

Gruyu Kunchov Staribratov was born in Koprivshtitsa, in the Ottoman Empire, in 1849 to Kuncho and Tsona Staribratov. He is known as a participant in the April Uprising.

On the first Sunday after Easter, he went to Todor Kableshkov's home with the teacher Gencho Belchev, enrolled as a member of the Revolutionary Committee and contributed three Turkish liras to its treasury. On 20 April 1876, he joined Brayko Enev's detachment and took up a position guarding the road to Zlatitsa village in the Ustieto locality. On 28 April, on the committee's orders, he participated in the extermination of the Turkish-identifying Roma of Koprivshtitsa in the Chardashko Dere area. He served there as a guard alongside Petko Gedzhenov and, at other insurgents' request, also participated in the massacre itself. He remained at his guard post until Turkish troops entered Koprivshtitsa.

After the uprising was suppressed, Staribratov hid from the Turkish authorities' searches and thus escaped torture, imprisonment and exile. He died in Plovdiv on 24 January 1928.
