Ghazi-Baraj Burundai
Title: Kan
Accession: 1236
End of rule: 1240
Period: Volga Bulgaria
Ghazi-Baraj Burundai was the last ruler of Volga Bulgaria. He took the throne from his predecessor, Kan Altyrbek Alan, by reaching an agreement with the Mongols and deposing him through an attack and siege. He moved the capital from Bilyar to Suvar. The country became a vassal of the Mongol Empire. Despite this status, he managed to arrange the withdrawal of Mongol troops from the country's territories and preserved a relative degree of autonomy for Volga Bulgaria. Nevertheless, he had to surrender the country's southern territories to the Mongol Empire. As a result of his actions, his domain became known in history as the "second emirate".
