Georgi Vasilev Tarnev was born in Plovdiv in 1852 and was the brother of Hristo Tarnev, who also participated in the April Uprising of 1876. In May 1869, both brothers joined the Revolutionary Committee in Plovdiv organised by Vasil Levski. Their inn served as a hiding place for weapons and ammunition for the forthcoming uprising, in which they actively participated.

Georgi Tarnev and his brother helped free the prisoners held in the Church of St Nicholas in Koprivshtitsa after the uprising's defeat. Following Levski's death, Georgi emigrated to Wallachia, where he joined the gendarmerie to acquire military knowledge. In late 1875, he returned to Plovdiv and began preparations for an uprising involving the inn.

When the uprising was proclaimed, he became leader of a band of sixty men and fought the Turks in Staro Novo Selo. After the uprising's suppression, he joined Kableshkov's group in Koprivshtitsa, intending to emigrate to Romania, but was killed by a Turkish pursuing force.

Georgi Tarnev was killed on 8 May 1876 after arduous journeys and fighting against Turkish pursuing forces. His monument stands at the place where he died, alongside memorials to other participants in the struggle for freedom. A commemorative plaque to the brothers Hristo and Georgi Tarnev was unveiled on Vasil Levski Boulevard in Plovdiv.
