Georgi Sursuvul

Georgi Sursuvul played a significant role in Bulgarian history during the reigns of Simeon I and Peter I. He was a high-ranking boyar, commander-in-chief and military leader, as well as a state diplomat. His sister was the wife of Tsar Simeon the Great and the mother of Tsar Peter, Ivan and Benjamin.

After Tsar Simeon I's death, Sursuvul was appointed guardian and co-ruler of the young Tsar Peter I. Simeon had made this decision before his death, as Peter needed experience and guidance to manage the state's complex problems. This period was marked by the beginning of the war with Byzantium, which had already lasted fifteen years.

Sursuvul undoubtedly played an important role in stabilising the political situation after Simeon I's death. His guardianship did not go unopposed, as there was tension between Tsar Peter and his firstborn son Michael, which can be seen as a challenge for Sursuvul in governing the state.

Although the explanation of the motives behind Sursuvul's selection as Peter's guardian may be debated, his role in stabilising the state and ensuring a transition to peaceful rule and diplomacy is indisputable.
